I just returned from Bahia Brazil, northeast just outside Salvador. The area has a new coastal highway called the Estrada do coco (coconut highway). The new road connects with the next north state of Serjepe. There are many new resorts and revitalized coastal fishing villages. The villages and resorts have all the modern amenities and activities. There are many wreck dives and reef dives off shore of the city of Salvador and up the northeast coast. The Brazilian currency "real" is weak compared to the American dollar. The exchange rates are stable around $1.00 dollar = 2.20 real - your money goes a long way in Brazil and the cost of living, meals, activities are less then half of Caribbean and American destinations. The ocean water is clear blue and warm, great visibility.

There are several PADI dive shops in the area that provide all necessary rental equipment, discover diving courses to advanced courses.

Everyone that takes a trip to Brazil always returns you will not be disappointed.

Enjoy,

I'll PM you about a trip once I get settled in more, so far only dove in Arrail do Cabo. Great diving there too.

I stayed 7 days at the Praia do forte eco resort... not much diving when I was there since a "storm" came in a week before and vis was 10 feet or less... and no turtles. Salvador has nice wrecks but the vis can be 20-40 feet in places in the bay. Not sure if it was seasonal but we went Oct 20 - Nov 8 last year. They do have a massive freighter that sank in 91 I think that is about 16,000 tons

We went to see the black alder and dove the break wall with Bahia Scuba. Excellent dive shop. The dives were warm in a 3mm full suit (temps near 75 F) lots of life but havent seen much of the bigger creatures.

Thanks for the update, Rolf--it's been a few years since I've visited. Makes me want to go back.

In this area, Fernando de Noronha http://www.noronha.pe.gov.br/eng/ctudo-tourism-intro.asp is widely considered the premier eco-tourism and diving venue.
It is a national park, however, and requires a permit to dive (these are limited), so plan it well in advance,

I'm on my way to Noronha in about 6 weeks. It would be nice to know if any other SBers will be up there at the same time. :)
