Scuba Diver Terrorists?

Saw this story on Yahoo and wanted to pass it on to everyone involved in the scuba world. Keep your eyes and ears open! Terrorists could be training at local dive shops the same way they trained at flight schools!

Do your part to help stop the "evil ones"

I posted the following on Natasha's thread as well:

What scares me is the thought of idiots out there who will be "patriotically" patrolling the beaches with _____ (fill in deadly weapon of choice), taking aim at divers who are just trying to enjoy their holiday weekend!

Maybe in addition to "always leave somone on the boat" we should also "always leave someone on the shore"...

Yep. I'm waiting for increased surveilence of baby carriages. Plenty of room in there for explosives.

But seriously, just after 9-11, our local boats were not allowed to let divers sleep over the night before pulling out for a morning dive. This was a hassle, because what if you had a 2hr drive & the boat left a 6am? And they had National Guardsmen going thru dive bags. Knives? Spearguns?

Funny, the warnings before 9-11 of a specific organization planning to hyjack a plane or planes to attack buildings were to general to do anything but now any little 'possibility' results in a warning to everyone.

Did you hear that they were asking the agencies that train rebreather divers to provide lists of everyone trained to use a rebreather? I hope all of those angencies told them to ask again when they have a search warrant.

The 'war on terrorism' is mainly a war on civil rights. The terrorists have won, we have changed nearly everything, spent billions of dollars and we are not any more safe than we were before.

The most "suspicious activity" I see is the actions of our own government.

Pipedope, you must be a terrorist! You are apparently a non-conformist and a scuba diver to boot! Your name also implies that you are indeed a terrorist, the word pipe could be a secret name for the type of bomb that you plan on using. Lets see, you dive around boats in the name of "cleaning" also!

I just hope this doesn't get taken too far as Scuba-Sass said .

I think that as long as people use common sense we will be fine.

First, it's turban.

Secondly, as any good Sikh wil tell you.....TURBAN does NOT= TALIBAN.

My purpose is not to provoke a flame war, but there are a lot of AMERICANS who wear turbans EVERY day. Just as there are many Sikh's who wear turbans, many Muslims do not.

I should also add that Muslim/Islam does not = Taliban.

Islam is a truly humanitarian religion, they encourage individual spirit, arts, music and personal self worth. Just as in many other religions, a few radicals (in the name of Jihad) have despoiled one of the world's greatest religions.

Again, not to pick...but to pick maybe just a little....My Sikh friends would appreciate a little understanding.

During the 60s or 70s a groupe of Palestinian terrorists dived from Acaba to Eilat, and put a bomb in Eilat's water reservouir. They managed to blow it up, and hold the regular water suply for the city for a couple of days. Now there are navy boats patroling the area, and anyone who dives at night must notify the navy. There a couple more attempts, but all where stoped. There where also a few trys at the north (in variouse ways beside SCUBA- from a jetsky to fishing boats), again most where stoped by the navy, accept one case where terrorists in rubber boats came from lebanon to a beach at the north, and killed a few people there, took others as hostages.

There is no way to completly shut yourself from terror, I just guess, that for americans, to have a terror attack on your own land is a new experiance. Unfortunatly, here in Israel we got used to it. As a matter of fact- just a few days ago, by sheer luck a terrorist action in a gasoline and gas tanks farm was averted. If it had succeeded the results could have been the same as a small atom bomb (killing zone of about 800 meter radius) killing thousands of people.

You are quite right Liquid. We have been very blessed not having to endure the possibility of a terrorist striking anywhere at any time. Unfortunately we have just joined almost every country in the world, and finaly need to take notice of our surroundings on a daily basis. Did I forget to mention doing it without living in fear!

I'd like to apologize....I believe I went way too far when I attacked your joke.

As you can tell, these/those types of jokes hit very close to home with me and I feel the need to defend those who are not in a position to, or cannot out of fear do so.
