I have a week trip to Lake Powell, and have been considering bringing some tanks and the 3/2 wetsuit. I heard that some of the side canyons can have crystal clear water.
I know that freshwater is usually not as jam packed with marine life as the Channel islands, my home dive spot, but it is diving.
Anyone have experience with Powell?

I have not dove lake Powell. But of the 2 ski trips I have made there, the one from up top by Bullfrog bay had water clarity of 30ft or so. The second time down by Page you could barely see your hand in front of your face underwater. Though this was over 10 years ago I hope it gives you an Idea.

Depending on were you go you could have poor to great vis, remember it's a large body of water. Worst place is around Hite since that's were the river feeds the lake.
I've generally had the best conditions in the areas around Bullfrog. Looking at some logs it looks like Lost Canyon, Iceberg Canyon and Cathedral Canyon had the best vis......that was in 2008 though.
Lake Powell is not the Channel Island but you'll find some aquatic life, fishing gear and if you get lucky trolling motors and other fine junk.

I recall years ago diving a cove outside of Page and heading out toward the main channel and found the wall very cool and erry in a unique way.
FYI your closest air fill will be in Page AZ.

I am leaving for Lake Powell tomorrow. I have been diving there for almost 20 years and never get tired of it. I find something on almost every dive, as the wind likes to blow things off of house boats. You should be able to dive up to 40 ft w/o wet suit this time of year. Below 40 and it gets a little cold and dark anyway. I usually dive with just a $25 plastic backplate and no bc (old school). Last month I dove in a box canyon in Forgotten Canyon (out of bullfrog) and vis was 30 ft. PM if you want.

Water Science - I live in Colorado and have spent a fair amount of time "on" the water at Powell. I am living in Hawaii for about a year or so on a project. Having rekindled my love for diving (50) logged here so far, I'm trying to aquire as much info about diving opportunities back near home. I'd love it if you would share more about the diving you do in Utah and surrounding areas. Thanks, Rick P.S. This request is open to all posters!!! :)

I go to powell twice a year and always take tanks with me and dive. there is tons of garbage in the lake due to wind blowing stuff off and due to people throwing stuff overboard also! I have found everything from a diving mask to a motorcycle tire, toys, chairs, towells, and in the right spots sunglasses (one location had 15 pairs!) it isn't the ocean but it is a chance to get wet and see some cool underwater canyons

How far is Globe from Sedona?

globe is 1 1/2 hours east of phoenix, but to get to sedona it would be close to 2 1/2 - 3 hours,

I am new to diving and I am living in Page, AZ for the summer and working at Lake Powell. I really want to do a dive here but I don't have my own equipment or a dive buddy. Does anyone know of a place nearby I can rent gear? Also do you know if there are any dive shops or groups that host dives here? I would love to meet some fellow divers!
