I have a goiter diagnosed as thyroiditis result. I was worked up extensively, six years ago and placed on a very low does of Synthroid. I have remained very stable during the last six years, until this recent last 6-8months. During this time I have again had more work up done with scans, ultrasound and lab work. My endocrinologist and surgeon agree my thyroid antibodies indicate thyroiditis causing thyroidmegaly. My surgeon told me the size has grown and will continue. At this time I do notice mild symptoms from it. I can feel the necks of clothing more. I have not had any problems scuba diving and my doctor feels that I am still able to without concern. I have scheduled to have my throid removed in March.

My question is two-fold; 1) How long after going on a 4 day liveaboard where I will most likely do 8-10 dives total should I wait before having surgery? Is there an effect of the diving with general anesthesia?

2) Is waiting 12 weeks post surgery long enough?

My doctor has told me I can return to all normal activities within 6-8 weeks. But, I am planning to vacation 12 weeks post surgery and want to dive if possible.

Is there any information on the effects of diving pre general anesthesia, and the time to recover post before resuming such activities as diving?

Cindy,

Good to hear from you on the board, sorry to hear about the Thryoid problems. Check with DAN. They should be able to help and take care of yourself. I hope I get to dive with you again sometime.

I did ask DAN and I heard back quickly. Sounds like no problems for the diving before with any anestheia. Also, they felt the time for recovery and my diving in 12 weeks post sounded adequate. They cautioned to be sure my thyroid levels were stable and I was physically capable. I am so glad and sure things will be fine.

Thanks for the replies.

I had my thyroid removed in 1970 and have been diving ever since. Of course your surgery will be recent when you start to dive again so that is your main concern. As long as the scar has healed I doubt that you'd have any problem.
