I have a sailboat and love it. I have dived from it, but sailboats are slow, and have high freeboard, so it is hard to get you and your gear back on. (I installed a lifting davit to get my gear back on board). If you are looking for a platform mainly to dive from, go with a power boat. If you want to cruise and occasionally dive from your boat at your destination, a sailboat's wonderful. I would not buy a sailboat until I'd rented or gone with friends several times. It's not for everyone.

The sail is about the ride...the power is about the destination, You get both with a power sailer and I have been diving off of a sail boat...mine and it was great! so great I didn't log about 12-15 dives. Multi hull verses mono hull...in my book multi hulls are made for the diving sailor and can get the knots going with some stability. The tanks can roll a bit if not stored properly, more than on a power boat. I will crew for you and be a dive buddy. My dream is sailing to great dive spots so I am really biased. Go for it and get as much fiberglass as you can unless you like working on wood a lot depending on where you live. Also invest in good bottom paint regardless. That way you can dive looking at something other than your boat's dirty hull.

We sail/race on OPBs here but within the next few years we will pick up a 40 ft +or- to cruise and dive off of. Our plan is to spend a few years sailing the Carib and southern gulf and if all goes well, maybe plan a circumnav of the equator. My father in law is a pretty famous steel sailboat designer, Bruce Roberts and my S.O. has sailed all her life. I've been researching the dive/sail thing for a few years and it is very doable, it just takes alittle planning.

I say GO FOR IT! but as its been said, sailing is about the adventure and time on the water, not the destination.:cool2:
