O2BBubbleFree:
I just heard the other day from the chief of the dive team at work that they bought a scooter (Dacor, maybe?) that had an optional compass mount. When they tried it out they ended up running in circles...

If I recall correctly, they solved the problem by extending the mount so that the compass was farther from the scooter, out of the magnetic field.

If you like, I can try to get more exact details when I get back to work after the weekend.
Thanks that would be great maybe I can DIY the thing this winter

Mr.X:
Post pics. fellas. Would love to see which scooters everyone is using and compass mounting configs. I run mine (Gavins) in caves/wrecks and use visual cues mostly.
I work tomorrow night and I’ll get some pics then.

We just use a simple wrist mount compass mounted to the screw shroud with a couple of zip-ties. Fast, simple and works well.

You link only works for Yahoo group members. How about posting some pics here?

The field is constant once you make the correction it's the same correction all the time.
Running in circles.. hmmmm...? :06:

If you put a magnet close to a compass, the compass will point directly toward (or directly away from) the magnet. If the magnet is not directly inline with the direction you are wanting to go, it will lead you in a circle of some size. There is no way to 'make a correction' short of removing the influence of the magnet.

In this case the magnet is the electromagnetic field of the motor in the scooter.

Here are the pics I promised.

Simple and works great.

Here is about a third of our back-up gear that isn't issued out. The cabnet is packed full as well.

Thanks for posting. X

p.s. Question: Is the center section of the compass boot secured to the shroud?

Yup, 3 zip-ties hold the whole thing on and it's out of the magnetic field.
