Nice sighting Bill. Maybe one day all the big fish will return to the waters aroung Catalina. I love to see a few more pinks as well!

Great sighting, Dr. Bill. Let's hope you get some pics next time.

The return of the white sea bass is due to the restoration project run by the Hubbs- Sea World Research Institute with volunteer support from the San Diego Oceans Foundation, among others. Volunteers are needed to feed the juveniles in the pens and to clean the containment nets of sea growth. San Diego Oceans Foundation

Anyone who takes a white sea bass, either by spear or line, should drop the head off at one of these locations: http://sdoceans.org/pdfs/WSB%20head_drop.pdf

Some of them have a tag (invisible to the naked eye) that supply research data.

Thanks Dave, Thats good info.

A friend whose donations help fund one of the grow out pens has given me the OK to dive in the pen and film these fish. I'm definitely going to learn more about them and write a future "Dive Dry with Dr. Bill" newspaper column on them. I only write columns on species I've actually observed so now this one can be a subject.

Why would a sea bass be on scuba?

Funny! However, as a marine biologist I can tell you that white sea bass and other fishes often use SCUBA (self contained underwater breathing apparatus). We biologists think it is simpler to just call them gills!
