Peter Guy:Tammy -- Kool -- were there SS agents around?
I did not see any security around. Not saying they weren't there, but saw nothing. Just Mr. Gore & his instructor (& some of the Pennyroyal staff, during a photo shoot going on when I arrived).
I've done annual service work on secret service regs, and in the past they have trained agents for that type of protection, so the odds are they were around.
reminds me of the joke "How can you tell Al Gore from his Secret Service agents? He's the stiff one,"
Why would he have Secret Service detail at the quarry? ?
Under law, Vice Presidents aren't authorized Secret Service protection after they leave office. Homeland Security authorizes it for 6 months typically, but it's not law or required. There was a bill in 2008 that was supposed to give them protection for 6 months after leaving office, but that failed to pass. (H.R.5938 - Former Vice President Protection Act of 2008)
Regardless, Al Gore gave up his Secret Service protection in the first six months after he left office. He even discussed giving it up after office in a Larry King interview.
as a note, Presidents since 1997 only get 10 years of protective service after they leave office. Bush still has it (until his 10 years run out).
Cheney still has a protective detail because of threats against him, ordered by Napolitano and Obama.
