Because your limit can be based on shucked meat or whole shells and it's easier (for me at least) to measure the shucked meat since I'm cleaning them on-site anyways.

"daily limit of 1 bushel in shell, or 4 quarts of shucked meats"

They measure them using liquid measures for convenience. Since they're somewhat amorphous, and squish together nicely, it's easy to completely fill a container with them. A gallon of scallop meats, sure... a gallon of live lobster, not so much.

Now we're mixing in bushels, pecks, rods, cosines....woah?!!! Now I'm really confused. Only kidding, I understand. I was never any good at anything dealing with numbers. However, I've found that I'm real good at subtracting....... Scalloping is on my list of dives to do this year. Hopefully, I'll make it.

What do you mean?

I hate when people don't get my jokes (no matter how bad they are). This would indicate that you would eat the entire gallon of scallops yourself. Like I tell the wife "if I have to explain it, it ain't funny". Of course her reply "that's because it wasn't funny to begin with". Doh.

Since they're somewhat amorphous,

Now where did I put that dictionary. This thread has gotten too heady for me. First measuring sea food in hectacres and jiggers and now fancy words.......... I just wanted to know where to find those scallops. I know without a NSA quality tracking system I am not getting near Decapoddiver's secret plateau.

Oh and Matt is right about measuring Lobster in gallons. Trying to get those buggers into an old milk container is near impossible, particularly when the wife is screaming she'll hang whoever dumped the new carton of milk down the sink.

Now wait a minute. First of all, sorry I didn't get the joke. I thought that was what you meant but wasn't sure. I don't like scallops so there was danger of me actually eating them all :)

Secondly, my spots weren't that hard to find. Here's how to find your own:
1. Go to the ocean
2. Go away from land
3. Go to you are in about 40-80' of water
4.Spend years finding, marking and tracking their movement

See? Easy :) You can do it.

Plan B: pay $80 and get two tank dives from a charter. Then spend the whole trip trying to make the math work as to how they could be making a profit doing dive charters .

Plan C: call the frisbee sized scallop guys and place an order to be delivered to my place of business the day before a dive. Pretend to haul them out of the water and post bogus information and pics on the board.

Don't get me wrong I wouldn't post the info either or it will be like the serious wreck diving industry with claim jumping and battles.

All kidding aside, I would be happy to take you scallop hunting. With gas at $3 a gallon, I'm not sure how many trips I can make this season though since by law I cannot charge or accept payment of any form. $80 in fuel per trip isn't going to appeal to the "Boss".

Can the guy at the gas station accept my payment? I think that it would be really pushing to the letter of the law and not the spirit if you weren't allowed to share expenses. Shoot just the cost of the up keep of the boat must be enough to make you think twice about owning one. Anytime you need company let me know. My shcedule is flexible 90% of the time.

I try really hard not to add up the cost of owning a boat. In the last year I have bought new electronics, navigation lights, an $1800 trailer and more. I better stop before the wife comes in the room and figures out just how much I've spent;)
