After reading all your comments, suggestions and opinions, we went to the store to look at the different Palm models and try to decide which one. I likied the size of the Vx but the glare on the screen was as bad as on my old Wizard. I decided on the IIIc, mainly because of the backlighting. The color screen is OK but wasn't really needed. It does the same thing the Vx does, is only a smidge bigger, and costs $75 less. AND there was a $50 rebate to boot which didn't hurt!
Now I just need to figure out some of the finer points. Downloading and syncing from the computer to the Palm couldn't be easier, which was a pleasant surprise. Seems nothing is ever as easy as they advertise. I think I'll have to buy a Palm modem in order to download e-mail but that's one feature I doubt I'll use. At least it isn't high on my list. I guess if I worked away from home, it would be nice though.
I did download the dive log program. It's very basic, just depth, avg. depth, time in and out, beginning and ending air, safety stop, dive site, buddy, air/surface/bottom temps, consitions, equipment and a page for notes. It also has a Nitrox Calculator that's very accurate. I know I won't depend on this for logging all dives, but it might come in handy at some point.
So, thanks everyone, for you help in choosing this new gadget. I'm sure I'm really going to enjoy it.
