We are thinking about an April getaway to Sanibel Island. Can anyone recommend a good dive shop to use for some local diving?

We are a family of divers ages 13 and up, a fair amount of experience. Any recommendations on where to stay?

Thanks, M

Couple of good dive shops in Fort Myers.

Capt. Pete's Diving Outfitters is on Colonial Blvd. And Dean's Dive Center is on US-41. Both are pretty good shops. I don't think there's a dive shop on Sanibel itself.

Never stayed on Sanibel, but have stayed quite a bit on Ft Myers Beach.... but always at a family's beach house, so I can't give a hotel recommendation... although I have frequented the beachfront Tiki Bar at the Outrigger Hotel a few times! Seems like a good place.

Drop me a PM if you're planning to any diving when you're down here!

Aren't the dive sites in that area some godforsaken distance from shore?
Like 75 -100 miles?

Thanks, what is the diving like? I'm OK with low vis, cold water, long surface rides to the site, current...etc, however, my family prefers nice clear blue warm still water....

What are the better sites.....

I'm vacationing at Sanibel right now and have been coming here for about 15 years. We're staying at Sanibel Siesta (SS), next to the Holiday Inn near the intersection of East Gulf Drive and Donax. This is our third year here. It's RELATIVELY cheap as Sanibel goes. You could easily spend $400-500/night for a 2 BR condo on the island. We're paying about $250-260/nt for a 2 BR, back from the beach. Beach front are substantially more expensive. Buildings # 1 and 2 are well back from the beach (a 1-2 minute walk if that), but they are the only ones that have an elevator. SS has few amenities except it does have a nice, heated pool and the condos are neat and clean. Plus it's right on the beach. The Holiday Inn is next door with food and drink if needed. Business is a little slow, so I'd call them directly and try to get a discount. We did for this stay, but January is a bit slower then later in the winter. April is considered high season, at least the early part for sure.

I stopped by Dean's a couple days ago with a gear question and to check them out. Nice, professional appearing shop. They were quite helpful. Apparently they support the local public service divers as the shop was full of deputy sheriffs and their gear. That's speaks well in my book.

I've not dove out of FT. Myers, but I understand this it's a long trip and marginal sites. Normally I'll run down to the keys for a couple days of diving when I'm here, but not this year. We've got some g-kids here and they take up the time-not a bad thing.

PM me if you have any questions.

I use this shop when I'm visiting the area: Scuba Quest Florida Dive Centers Cape Coral Florida Scuba Quest Dive Center

There's some nice shore diving in Venice Beach, less than an hour north on 75.

Usually, I'll drive across Alligator alley and go diving with Underwater Explorers: Underwater Explorers - SCUBA Diving Boynton Beach, Delray, Palm Beach, Reefs and Wrecks

Kev's a great divemaster, and can take you on some breathtaking wreck and reef dives off Boynton Beach. Kev took the photo in my avatar during one of those dives this past summer.

Great information, I really appreciate it. We will think more about it this weekend and make a final choice for our April vacation. SB is a great forum, where else can you get info like this. I may be sending some PM's next week....:)
