Back in November, I decided to return to diving after a 10 year hiatus. I called my old dive buddy who had been out of the water for a few years himself, and we started making plans and getting his inflatable ready. We even did a quick review course with a local DM.
Since I sold off my old gear, and gained a few pounds to boot, I went out and purchased new gear and a new drysuit. Due to end of the year inventory, DUI didn't ship my drysuit until the beginning of January...Time dreaming of getting wet: 7 weeks.
Once the dry suit arrived, we made plans to dive the following weekend. Unfortunately, San Diego conditions didn't cooperate and we scrubbed the dive and made plans for the following weekend. Time dreaming: 8 weeks.
Friday of the following week, conditions are improving and I'm gettting totally jazzed. I call my buddy to confirm the weekend plans and find out he's in bed with the flu, completely congested. No diving for him, and since he's my only buddy, none for me either. Time dreaming: 9 weeks.
Now the kicker, last Tuesday night, my buddy was involved in a serious car accident, fracturing 5 ribs and laying him up for the next month or so easy. Thankfully, he'll recover and we'll dive together in the future, but my wife brought up a good point: I really can't rely on only having 1 dive buddy. Time dreaming: 10 weeks and counting.
So, now I humbly come before the members of Scubaboard in search of dive buddies.
I was a PADI instructor in the early 90s. My skills are rusty but pool refreshed. My drysuit is brand new and I haven't had a chance to get my weighting dialed in. I have no idea what to expect concerning my air consumption, but it used to be very good. I've always been extremely safe, but I know I'm not in nearly as good of shape as I used to be in.
I know that I'm not the most desirable dive buddy right now, but with a few dives under my belt I'll be as good as new. I'm excited to get back into diving and have thought about taking a few classes just to meet people, but thought I'd see if anyone in San Diego was patient enough to let me tag along with them.
