I just got back from a trip to So Cal. What a great trip! I went out on the Great Escape, an 80 ft dive boat to San Clemente Island in the south channel islands. I got on board at 9pm on friday and we left the dock at 1am (or so I'm told, I was dead asleap in my bunk by midnight). We cruised across the channel on dead calm seas and reached San Clemente at around 6am. What a beutiful morning, it looked as if the mainland were a mere few miles away and Catalina even closer it was so clear.
After a brief dive briefing the gates were open for our first dive of the day at a place called window pane. The water was 60 deg, no current and about 100 ft vis (give or take 10 ft). I dove mostly around a large rock pinacle the went from about 60 fsw to 120fsw. Lots of stuff to see, but I didn't know what most of it was.
After a hot breakfast it was time for our second dive at a site called the wreck of the Little Flower. This site had it all. Nice kelp (for winter) in the shallower water (about 40 to 60 fsw) 50 ft walls and pinacles. There are the remains of the Little flower somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Seen more larger fish then on the first site. I recognized sheepshead and one of the guys shot a nice Calico bass.
After lunch we did our 3rd and 4th dives at Mesquito Cove. The water was starting to get a little murkier now, maybe 50ft vis. TONS of lobster here. There must have been hundreds of them little buggers, everywhere! All were to short however to invite home to dinner.
If anyone has the chance to go on this trip, I recomend it. The Great Escape had comfortable berths, good food and very nice, helpful crew.

Great report, shaggie. I'm going on the Spectre to Anacapa and Santa Cruz. I'm glad you had a great time in SoCal.

Thanks for sharing of the great trip west!

Yep, San Clemente has some awfully nice diving. Glad you enjoyed your trip to dive "our" islands! Thanks for the report.

Great report, shaggie. I'm going on the Spectre to Anacapa and Santa Cruz. I'm glad you had a great time in SoCal.

Some of the people I went with told me that the Great Escape is the sister ship to the Spectre and the Truth. She was origianaly the Charisma. There is a plak on the wall of the galley with the original name and year christened ('78?).

The Charisma and the Encore were origonaly the Hess family boats out of 22nd st. landing. The Charisma was sold and I think it became the Great Escape. I may have something turned bass ackwards but I have dove both boats years back and the Great Escape with the current owners. Truth Aquatics have owned all three of their current boats for a long time, I have enjoyed diving the Truth a number of times years back.
