Thanks for the offer, but I'm really not planning on diving the Shores until next summer.

Next summer? Dude...what are you waiting for??? You might miss out on a squid run this fall/winter. Head out with a good diver that knows the area. You'll have a blast.

You might consider taking an advanced class to boost your confidence.

Haven't been to San Clemente on a "Day Boat." Only on overnight trips on the Horizon. Sounds like a really long day.
 
San Clemente, I logged dives 8 and 9 there and it is a truly awesome place to dive. the dive boat dropped anchor in 100 feet of water and you could see the anchor from the deck! On that day the currents were not an issue at the sites we went to. At best you will get some great diving, at worse, a nice sea voyage and some good conversation with fellow divers and if on the Great Escape some great food too.
