howdy texans! i'm pretty new to diving, and i'm going to hawai'i on monday. i was wondering what some good dive spots around the san antonio/austin area are. my group (Family) wants to get a dive in before we go. thanks in advance!

Some of the Central Swampers can be more specific but there's Lake Travis and Canyon Lake real close to you.

For Austin there is Lake Travis. People usually dive from three places. Windy point private side, windy point public side, and Mansfield dam. All of these places do have a $5-$10 fee.

Welcome to diving :hi:

My Personal favorite was medina lake, it is a half hour from San Antonio. If you dive from the marina on lake medina you can do a wall dive. There is an underwater muesem consisting of a speed boat, a jon boat, a lawn tractor, plymouth horizon, a walk around style boat and you can even follow the rails that they used for mining. I believe it was a rock quarry before it was dammed. The jon boat is in shallow water and there is plenty of fish around it. The fish are pretty good size there: Bas 5 - 10 lbs, cats 5 - 10lbs and some descent sized pan fish. The vis is around 10 ft and depths reach 135'. after about 70' the vis is horrible. There is also canyon lake over there on the east side but I never dove it. Duggan diving uses canyon lake for training and they can give you water conditions. Dive masters of San Antonio uses medina lake and they should be able to give current conditions. As mentioned in others posts their is a fee. It used to be $5 per carload.

What is the approximate maximum depth of the Comal River?

My wife got certified in the comal river, the deepest spot there was 14 ft when I was playing dead on the bottom of the deep pool for a rescue diver class. it averaged 8-10 ft in the areas we were actually diving. Despite the lack of depth it was an interesting dive. lots of fish life, Of course it was my first official dive with my wife as my buddy so that added to the special nature of the dive.

thanks guys! appreciate the help, i'll let my pops know :) my uncle used to live off medina.

There's a small group of us that get together for diving local areas. You are welcome to join us anytime.

Let me know if you are interested, and that way I can contact you when I hear of another SA diver outing.

And we also don't always go as a group, depending on people's schedules. So if you need a dive buddy, there are always people looking for one.

good luck!

PM me, and I can give you my univerisity e-mail address, and put you on our group list. :)

I lived in San Antonio for seven years.

Canyon lake is a good get wet dive.

I prefered Belmerhea. A state park 185 miles East of Texas/New Mexico border. It is an old Army training hole from the 20's It is a spring 2 acres and 30' deep with crystal clear water. Good camping, local dive shop, lots of fish. It has a three sided swiming pool opening to it. the bottom is rock/gravel. Excellant night dive. On a clear night you night dive it without lights.
It's at the Pecos on I-10.

Where are your going in Hawaii. I lived there for 4 years doing 250 dives a year. If Oahu, try Blow hole, Three tables, Sharks Cove. http://www.hawaiiweb.com/html/sharks_cove.html
If you ecer get a chance to get to The FLorida pan handle drop me a line. I plan on diving to day. I live 7 miles from Vortex spring. Check out their web cams www.vortexspring.com

If you are going to Hawaii try and look up Ben Chapman. He played the creature from the Black Lagoon, now a realitor in Hawaii. email at the=reelgillman@webtv.net
