Good luck using pliers to cut an accident victim out of their BC webbing or out of their wetsuit. I suppose pliers could have helped the guy in the Diver Down story, but I can't see pliers replacing shears.
 
Yeah I was just wondering what a good middle ground is, and if there are shears that are built more like pliers for easier use and far greater cutting potential in terms of material to cut. Hmm
 
Shears are built with very large loops for your fingers. I don't think pliers would be any easier to handle, in fact I think pliers / wire cutters would be more difficult to handle since you could easily drop them, especially with cold hands when wearing thick gloves. I have also seen shears cut pennies in half, so they shouldn't have any problem with a fishing lead.
