.......If a computer is so complicated that I need a simulator, I am going to buy a different computer........

You will be surprised by how many people DO NOT read the dive computer Operating Manual.
With our online classes we try to help them to better understand how to use their dive computers.
The use of the (free) simulator is optional ..... and apparently the 9,612 users that have performed 50,869 virtual dives like it :D

My take on the difference between safety stop and deco stop is: "if you are using our simulator and you ascend missing a deco stop ..... you will be killed "

This is the "new to diving and considering diving" forum. It is entirely possible the original poster is new or considering diving in which case the poster could answer no to being certified and haven't selected an instructor yet to the other, just wanted to better understand some of the terms used.

and again if required

Anyway, by the time and with all the effort it takes to get from your bed to a safety stop, which is safe, value for money would suggest using as much of your air as deemed also safe because you paid for it and taking your tank to the shop for a top off doesn't really work, so riding an anchor line upside down or looking at fish or nothing or your depth gauge practicing bouyancy is a safe practice, maybe not the anchor line with people clambering over you, but it sure beats waiting and listening to computers beeping and people off gassing on the boat.

If you need a computer simulator then change computers - a recreational computer is not that complicated. Most of them can be slapped on and jump in without even reading the manual. If you can't grasp a recreational dive computer in a few minutes of playing around you probably lack the mental capacity to be diving at all.

There does seem to be a lot of self publicity and marketting going on in this thread from divenav who insists on pushing his own agenda. Pity as its distracted from the thread.

I do think the use of a typical computer on an uneventful dive is fairly easy. But there are a lot of alarms and infrequently seen displays that can confuse people -- and have, because they have written about it here. Why is everybody so annoyed at the idea of a computer simulator? I'm not sure how I would have gotten my Suuntos to give me the screen they would come up with if I were in deco, when I was on land. Those screens ARE in the manual, and I would agree that not enough people read it or study the photographs. I certainly didn't.

There is a good writeup on Safety Stops in the PADI Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving.

Basically, safety stops are designed to give added protection against both AGE and DCS. By requiring divers to try to maintain some control of their buoyancy and ascent rates, a safety stop helps to prevent too-rapid ascents. By allowing some extra time for off-gassing, a safety stop greatly reduces detectable bubbles in the bloodstream.

Do you have a simulator that instructs in the use of the Cochran Gemini? Try reading the manual for that puppy and you will understand why a lot of divers don't bother.

I cannot speak for anybody else but it is not the thought of the simulator that detracts from threads such as this. IMO (and it is just my opinion), this thread would be better served discussing real life and what happens, not what happens in an elaborate video game. Death = no more diving in real life.....there is no reset. While I have never been able to get DiveNav working on my system at home, I will say that when pretty much every post in this thread references their software in some way, it really makes me want to read another thread instead. I have no issue what so ever with them as a member, but I do think that there is such a thing as too much advertising (verging on spamming).

Just my opinion and I mean no disrespect to any member past, poresent or future :D.

In benign conditions in the water using a backup timer, take dive computer, attach computer to DSMB and then fire the DSMB to the surface :)

Might not be a good idea for some people but might be interesting :)

If it is an air integrated you could even attach a SpareAir with a marble taped over the purge button. :D
