I keep mine in the BCD pocket with the reel already knotted on and the line clipped to the BCD pocket. Always practice deploying it, the trick is to go heavy before you start, the increased bouyancy of the DSMB as you hold it while you inflate it makes you more bouyant until you release. Ib those few seconds you can easily rise 5m, then your computer alarm goes off just as youre concentrating on deploying the thing! I carry mine for all boat dives.

There are actually a number of useful YouTube segments on how to deploy the SMB with a spool. One thing for sure, practice deploying underwater until you can do it correctly. There are serious safety hazards involved, such as getting tangled in the line or being inadvertently pulled up in the water column by the inflating and ascending SMB (definitely NOT a good thing.) Just search YouTube with the keywords SMB and deploy. For example:
