My reel has 55m (185ft) of line on it.

Allowing roughly 50% for currents it means i can deploy from 30m (100ft) or shallower safely.

I deploy it immediately on leaving the bottom as soon as possible.

For surface inflation? I think the open bottom bags would be difficult to inflate at the surface,
Don't most finger spools run about 75' ? Not that I'd want to deploy one that deep, 30-40 is probly better IMHO

I can only speak for the Carter Personal Floats, which are an open bottom SBM, they are very easy to inflate at the surface because the opening is self sealing. No air will escape once you inflate it. To dump air, there is a dump valve, just like on your BCD.

If you are on the surface, most likely the oral inflation valve is the convenient way to inflate it. The open end is handy at depth, just use your octo or reg to shoot some air in there.

If you are looking for a simple, general purpose smb, I think you should stick with an oral inflate, closed smb. They roll up much smaller and you can save a couple bucks. Still look for quality though. My friend shot his basic SMB on Friday night from depth and it exploded on the way up. This is the downside of inexpensive. No dump/over-inflate valve and thin material. Take a look at the Carter SMB, its lonnggg, but if you ever get caught in a large swell you'll be happy. Here's a photo

Damn! That's serious sausage! :11:

Hi
flotation units with manual dump valve and (non-air spill).
openings that prevent your SMB or lift bag from dumping air or taking on water when it hits the surface. recreational or tec dive from 3 feet to 10 feet....

Hi all,

2 questions:

I am looking into buying a safety sausage. Any recommendation for brand and type? Should I buy one that orally inflates, inflates with regulator, etc.?

Recommendations for padded weight belts that accomodate the regular weights (the non-lead shot weights)?

Thanks!

Howdy

I picked up a 6' Oceanic sausage with a dump valve and self-sealing feature for not a whole lot of money. Regarding infation...what works best for me is to fill the sausage from my BC so I maintain neutral bouyancy (well...for the most part). That way I can put in the right amount of air at depth so that the sausage is filled at the surface without affecting my depth at the same time. Just replenish the BC and dive on!
