As always, use your common sense, should you be lucky enough to have any.

Unfortunately common sense seems to be a lot less common than one would hope. IMO
Hmmm... seems to be a theme forgotten... What is this "common sense" issue that eludes some... perhaps it is that magical "pixie dust" thing that has eluded some here on this thread and many others...

Perhaps we should think about "common sense" as if it were "pixie dust". Some people have a grasp of "common sense" and can spread it much like "pixie dust"... others will only profess it as just that... "pixie dust".

Some people will take necessary precautions in their local area... And, some of those same people expect much more when travelling. They expect the "pixie dust" to be there before they arrive...

They expect it to be there when travelling beyond their realm of High walls and boat dives, and it should be there whenever they need it. It is a shame that reality can slap you in the face and say HEY! You need to spread your own "pixie dust" if you want to have a good time and be safe too

As I indicated, I took in the items of worth. Actually, the way I will typically reason it out is I will ask myself "If I lose this will it ruin my vacation and does this make to easy a target?". If the answer is yes, it comes in. If the answer is no, then I am comfortable leaving it out but it may still come in.

When it comes to scuba gear and vacations/travel:

If I didn't need it, I didn't bring it.
If I need it, it has value.
If it has value, I don't leave it outside.

:cool2:

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Folks, the topic of theft in Bonaire has been beaten to death in here recently. You have all had more than adequate opportunities to voice your opinions on the matter and it has now degenerated into name calling, insults, debates over who said what, finger pointing, POV wars and insults.

It needs to stop and it needs to stop right now.

In order to assist you with your self control in posting the staff will now begin issuing forum bans from the ABC Islands forum for ANY more name calling, trolling, insults, finger pointing, etc. The bans will be for 5 days for the first offense and increase for additional offenses. Attempts to circumvent the bans by having others post for you or starting the topic up in another forum here may result in bans from Scubaboard.

From the TOS-

This is a friendly forum based on mutual respect.
Profane, racial, insulting or mean spirited language is simply not allowed here and this includes any sort of harassment or cyber bullying.
Trolling-
Exploiting the weaknesses of human nature or of an on-line community to upset people. ScubaBoard includes POV warriors, cranks, impolite users and disruptive behaviour in this definition.

The existing threads will be left for now, do not start new threads to address prior thefts (or lack of thefts). If something new develops that would be acceptable. Derailing other threads with this topic is also unacceptable.

Please consider this a cease fire order. :D

OK, back on track..

I don't leave my gear out overnight in Bonaire because of the mosquitoes. I do leave it on the balcony patio (balcony means 2nd floor) to dry before night fall.

Skeeters do steal way too much of my blood on Bonaire. Dining out can be a hassle, if I forget to bring the repellent and use it liberally!

I am usually the first one they discover in a party, and sometimes the only one! :shakehead: And to make things worse, my skin tends to react worse to bug bites than my companions. :depressed:

Since I seldom bother with any more than a skin on Bonaire, drying neoprene on the patio is seldom required. Air is so dry it dried pretty quick anyway, when I did dive in a wetsuit!

One reason (not the only one) we choose to stay at Den Laman is because all the units (except 1) are on the second and third floors. We prefer to stay in a 3rd floor unit (better view/less noise) and typically leave our BCs, wetsuits, and booties on the lanai to dry.

I agree. Exactly where we once stayed, and except for sometimes slippery steps up, the third floor was really nice, and the balcony for drying was great. Only had to run down once, to recover an item that the wind blew off the balcony!

After having to retrieve wind blown items from down below we now always bring a handful of stainless steel clips (about $.50 each) to help secure our items up on the balacony. They work particularly well on lighter weight items like bathing suits and rash guards but do also help on wetsuits when the tropical winds get stronger.

Ah, yes, it brings back memories. Once, not on Bonaire, I was looking down from our balcony about 100 ft above the sea and I asked my wife "What's that in the water?" She said it looks like a piece of clothing.

We both then silently scan the items scattered around, drying on the balcony and I said "Oh crap, where's my swimsuit?" (Or something similar)

She laughed and told me to have a nice swim.
