If I remember right, it's a small beach area where people walk in to shore dive. It's just not a fancy area. But Robin or RoatanMan are better people to answer this.

Hopefully they will chime in. My girlfriend, who is not yet a diver, will be one by the time we get there... but she'll probably want a few days of sunning herself with less than maximum dive time. :) I just want to make sure CCV has some nice places to just chill out in the sun.

Also, I need to search the board for info on this place:
Chillies: Best Budget Hotel on Roatan Island

She's interested in patronizing locally-owned businesses where possible, which I can't argue with.

There's not really a beach that you would put a towel on, but there are some nice decks over the water for the sun worshipers!!

I am going to Roatan in mid-May so I was very pleased to find this discussion.

No beach at all, or no fancy beach? They advertise unlimited shore diving.

no beach at all, just a sandy area where the divers walk in and out from the shore diving. :D

I would highly recommend Coco Veiw. The houses are a bit down the road for the main dive area, just a short bike ride away. If possialbe i would recommend one of the cabbanas.

We have dove and stayed there multipal times - its a great place, you allways feel like your at home :)

yeah, I don't mind not having a beach when I can stand right on one of the walkways and see things like: Day 1 - a chain moray in 1-2" deep water, all week a green moray out at breakfast time, 2 people saw a seahorse from their overwater room one morning, people went out one night after dinner with lights and watched eagle rays swimming over the seagrass right there in the front yard, and another group saw an octopus right there in 1-2' water in front of their room! Sitting on your balcony in a hammock, watching the sealife - it doesn't get much better than that! :D

I had forgotten about the eels at breakfast. The staff there would feed them little pieces of ham. That was kinda cool.

1) A group of us (anywhere from 3 to 5 of us) are going to be in Roatan in May. We're now researching where to stay/dive. Any suggestions? The only places I've heard much about are CocoView and Anthony Key. Key factors are price, comfort, quality of dive operation.

2) Cocoview has a bunch of houses they rent out (near the resort with full use of resort facilities). Does anyone have any experience with staying in the houses?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

I'd absolutely recommend Coco View. We've been there 6 times, and have made very good friends at the resort and just keep going back and seeing them again. It's a wonderful friendly atmosphere, and the resort is totally designed for divers. Food is quite good, and has just gotten better over the years.

I have stayed in a house once - and it was very nice - this was Doc's - house #4 - it's the closest to the resort. Some houses have AC in the BRs and some don't - you need to check the playa miguel web site or email Roatan Charter to be sure. Personally, for your first trip, I'd recommend getting either standard Ocean Front rooms (ALL rooms have ocean views), 2nd floor is my preference. Or one of the over the water Cabana rooms - request an end unit closer to the club house. BH4 is a 90 sec bike ride away (bunches of bikes are right by the dive area) - figure another 30 sec per each house away.

Coco itself is sized just right - it's a very short walk to anything, but there's enough space that you don't feel on top of anything else. Even when the resort is full, it's just fine. May is a nice time to be there. I've been there in May, Aug, Oct, Nov. Aug was the best, but May was great too.

Trip Advisor has tons of reviews of Coco and AKR. Friends of mine that have gone to both have preferred Coco.

Just watch out for "Scuba Gangstas" - see photo - I'm the mean one with bunny ears.

Jeff

If you want to"swim with captive dolphins" and the like then I would suggest Anthony's Key. As for me I prefer the excellent dive facility of Cocoview and the best dive staff ever. Rustic bar and no frills dive resort. I can go float in a pool and drink pina coladas any time.
