Hiya...

Need some help in deciding where to go.... what are the differences??

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

August '05 I did Deep Blue in Utila, August '06 was Fantasy Island in Roatan.

If I went back, I'd go for Utila, more of a pure diving locale and I really did seem to see more. If you want more night life non-diving things, the Roatan resorts probably offer more, just that I really go on vacation for diving. The Deep Blue folks were really super, tied into whale shark research, fun to chat with at night.

If I were YOU I'd go to Utila. Check out Deep Blue Divers and Deep Blue Resort they are run by nice Brits. Also for info on Utila check out www.aboututila.com. Are you still teaching? Probaly easier to find work in Utila. Roatan is just a ferry ride away.

Regards,

Looking at your profile, it looks like Utila would be your obvious choice.

Looking at your previous posts and threads that you have started, it looks like you have no real direction in mind of any sort.

Focus, man, focus. Only you can point yourself in the right direction grasshopper.

It has be awhile since we went but loved Utila. There is trip report, slideshow and gallery for both at our site.

Roatan reminded me of Jamaica. I'd go back, especially with non-diving friends, but its not my style. Utila was something else. Its all about the diving. I'm still working on getting my ducks in a row so I can move there.

Utila > Roatan

That comparison absolutely baffles me.

Sounds like maybe you might'a ended up in the wrong place on Roatan. It's an island where few visitors come away with similar impressions as the next guy. Your localized environs on the island are much like microclimates. People who stay less than 1/4 mile apart can have radically different impressions.

Good plan, but the ducks won't like it- too dusty. Two islands, so close, yet worlds apart. Go see Utila now~ before it gets TARFU'd.

Why would it baffle you? Two islands, both mountianous, both tropical, both with fantastic beaches and sunsets on the west end, both with drug and prostitute problems, both into partying, both have the same vibe and nearly identical infastructure, both have native islanders splashed with American hippies. I'm not sure you can have two islands any closely related than Jamiaca and Roatan. Roatan now = Jamiaca in the early 1980's. Jamiaca today is likely going to be the Roatan of 2020.

It's an island where few visitors come away with similar impressions as the next guy. Your localized environs on the island are much like microclimates.

Which makes me ask why you are baffled then by my comparison? You expect everyone to have different conclusions, but are baffled by mine. You sound like a conflicted individual, or at least one that seemingly has to voice their opinion louder than the next guy.

Two islands, so close, yet worlds apart.

Now that is accurate. Kind of amazing how different the two are. Landing on Utila was like taking a time machine back 50 years. I loved it.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the info - between you and some net research seems like Utila is the place for me considering I lived and worked in Koh Tao and Koh Phi Phi.. i hear/read its kinda similar?

Also will I get good diving conditions at the beginning of December?

My final, and probably most important question...where else in that part of the world (caribbean/central america) is the diving better? Belize? Tobago? (not Cocos Islands)

RoatanMan - Cheers for the advice - but as you can see - i love to look around for my next vacation!! I ended up with Whalesharks in Madagascar last year.. and this year.. well i've never dived the carribean.. so utila seem a good place to start? unless in there is somewhere better?
