Im going to be in Jakarta mid-October for a few days of shopping accessories for my dive lights before heading for Alor. Hopefully things will be calm by then and the shops remain open and I don't get caught up in some mob action …

PS - What stores would you recommend for UW camera accessories?

Depends on what you consider as recently.
Fortunately all is calm again since the start of September. But sad enough, at least one person died.
"At least one person died"!!!
You have been very generous.
Only time will tell if the whole issue has been resolved one way or another.
Philippines has not been able to solve the issue down in Mindanao and so is Thailand in the deep south four provinces.

Just type "sectarian killing in Sulawesi" and see what your internet server dishes out for you.

I've been in Jakarta and the outskirts in Bekasi city, for the last few days. Really, as an Australian, Western mainstream media has become so unreliable for accurate facts. It's the number one reason so many people get their news from independent sources from the internet & media outlets like YouTube.

Shops, and large busy shopping centres have been open. No unrest whatsoever. There's no hardline military or police presence in public. The instigators & the source of funding for the "protests"(riots) are being investigated. Pak Prabowo the President was very wise, and he didn't take the bait, and his reaction wasn't what the instigators intended, which was more casualties to stir unrest.

Master Selam is the only diving store I can remember at the top of my head. There were a couple of others, but it's been several years since.

Plis, don't worry about false narratives. Indonesia is safe,...just the floods, volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis you need to be aware of,...which is everywhere in Indonesia and Jawa 😉.

Indonesia is a very peaceful country.

This could become another Aceh.

Wrong place at the wrong time! Wrong place, wrong time or plain unlucky. There is nothing you can do on the last one but the other two? Your choice.

Plain unlucky.

Old story but still true.

Don't take it personal as there is nothing to agree or disagree, your own choice.

I've just spent over a week on Siladen, did not see any problem on the island or arriving and departing Manado.

There will always be political nonsense and sensationalist noise in the "news" - that's literally what the brainwashing TV programs and papers exist to serve up. All of it can and should be ignored.

Relevant to our community of divers is simply: are the flights, boats, roads and general infrastructure up & running as normal? And the answer is - inevitiably for a huge and populous country such as Indonesia - yes of course.

Thanks for the latest ground report on the situation. As for MS I checked out the shop in a July and they only had a few limited brands and stocks on display.

I think I will checkout divesea shop this time. Seems to be more multi-brand accessory store and I only need generic knick-knack stuff. Last trip I went to three shops and nobody seems to stock everything I need

Precious life is never a simple matter!

Even Indonesian Gov admitted 8 has been killed rather than one quoted here.

Turning a blind eye to FACT!

Divesea is as good as any other. I bought my last camera from them and `have zero complaints. Their website is consistent with what they stock if you want to look in advance.

I tried to stick to the facts of which I am certain that they are true. Other people died, for example in a terrible fire during the unrests. If you keep in mind the size of the country and population, Indonesia is a country with very little violence. I don't have to do any internet searches on these topics. I lived here permanently the last 27 years. And we experienced the horizontal conflict at the Maluke in person.
