I carry a 30m spool with distance knots on it. The primary purpose of the knots is for lost line/buddy searches in overhead, also for general searches and approx measurements. It also serves as a method to gauge depth.
It's marked:
3m - 1 knot
6m - 2 knots
9m - 3 knots
12m- 1 knot
15m- 2 knots
18m- 3 knots
21m- 1 knot
24m- 2 knots
27m- 3 knots
Sometimes I practice deco ascents using it in conjunction with my dive watch. I've also practiced it with no-mask, counting out (relatively light) deco stops mentally.
As others have, and will, note... the line has to be vertical for depth to be accurate - so it has limited use in stronger currents.
