RFC: second stage seats substitutes

I just talked to my neighbor who serviced his Mares Nikos with an Awap seat. He also confirmed that the seats we used in his Sherwoods were all done with the same. Later today I'll try to get some model names.

Here comes Mares, thanks to LeadTurn_SD for the input. That's an easy one, where one part fits all:
9/32" x 5/64" or
.281" x .078 or
7.22mm x 2.05mm

I think the A149 and the AA88 may need a bit of glue to stay put
The awap and the AA88 are a bit thin, but that should not be a concern since I believe all Mares are dual adjustment's.

I think the A149 and the AA88 may need a bit of glue to stay put... The awap and the AA88 are a bit thin, but that should not be a concern since I believe all Mares are dual adjustment's...

Assuming my measurements are accurate, I "concur" I'd look for the hole punch with the closest diameter (9/32" should be the right one) over the EPDM sheet with the exact thickness.... a hair too thin or too thick should not be a problem, but I think the diameter needs to be pretty close to "spot on".....

But maybe with adhesive-backed EPDM a slightly too-loose fit would be ok?

After just paying retail + shipping for five Mares 2nd stage rebuild kits (with 3 more that will need rebuild in 6 months or so), a 9/32 hole punch and a sheet of EPDM from McMaster Carr is looking pretty good

On a couple of AIR 2 units I rebuilt, I was considering that a thicker seat would be of some benefit as the lever adjust nut was on the very last poppet thread. This of course is more of an issue with the Second Generation AIR 2 as it does not have an adjustable orifice like the later generation models. However, I found the seats to be a perfect fit as far as diameter goes.

I had not considered the effect seat thickness might have on the position of the nylock nut.

Edit: Ok, it seems that the next thickness is 50% thicker at 3/32" ....I bet that would do nicely in cases where one is running out of poppet threads.

The punch awap is using matches (near exactly) the diameter measurement I got on the Mares soft seat with my shiney new caliper last night. That, plus several "success stories" with his magical seats on a variety of regs inspires a good deal of confidence

I've gotta say the fact awap "eye-balled" the measurement blows me away.... I'd lost my old caliper so I tried to measure the seats with a decent ruler and my aging eyes, but about went crosseyed trying to focus on the tiny lines on the ruler, so I gave up and bought a new caliper with a digital display.... now if I could just un-cross my eyes so my kids would stop laughing at me

I can feel your pain: I too have 3 or 4 kits I paid retail for. Looks like they'll stay in a drawer forever. :depressed:

You guys be sure to have a nice piece of scrap wood on your bench before punching out the seats, otherwise you will have nice little decorative rings cut in your work bench.
