Just got back(12-19-09) from FI Roatan so I thought I'd give a quick review for you guys from a 1st timer with not very many dives under his belt.
1st, It's not 5 star by any means but the resort and room was clean and comfortable. The staff was very good at keeping the room picked up, the grounds raked and trash removed. The food was not very good and I left with the feeling it's due more to budget than anything. I say this because the last 2 nights it was much better than the rest of the week. The last night in paticular they served some excellent fried fish while most other meals the fish was edible at best. The wait staff was always great the entire trip throughout the resort. If I had any complaints it was with the tour director rarely to be found and not very organized when he was
. Bar staff was great
thanks Jonel.
As for the diving we were not very pleased with the equipment we were rented. Again we don't have many dives so I'm just speaking from someone not very experienced point of view. I had to exchange my 1st set of regs due to my main 1 blowing by. The 2nd set had leaks and backup would freeflow at times but I could get it to shut off with a couple of raps. My wife changed hers after a couple of days because the mouth piece was pretty chewed up and was given a set with a hose to her BC that looked questionable at best. Well, it blew out on her the 2nd dive but fortunately it was on the boat and the DM had a spare hose.
As far as the diving went we were very happy. Top side was a little rough the 1st few days and we had a few rain showers but not a big problem. The boats were easy to get into and very comfortable. Captain Rocky had plenty of water, fresh fruit and a dry towel handy at all times. DM Miguel was a very good guide and both guys were pleasant and fun to be around. All the dive sites were within a few minutes of the dock which was also nice.
Below surface was fantastic. Lots of healthy coral and marine life. Some of the coral seemed to be endless. The best stuff seemed to be above 50' so I was always a little more shallow than the rest for most of the dive. Although we had some dives we found to be more enjoyable than others they were all very similar in terrain, marine life and coral, coral, coral. Vis was good on most dives, in the 80' range but we did have a couple dives where it dropped to about 40 or 50'. Some of our favorite site were Marys Place, Too Tall Too Small which we did both day and night. The night dive was great with several octopus to be seen. Other favorites were Gold Chain, Forty Foot point and the sunken ships. PA was always stirred up so that took a little away from it but it was still good. We dove it 3 times with 2 being at night. Anka's place was crazy with a huge chunk of wall missing due to earthquake.
That's all for now, hope it helps anyone planning to head down there and I also hope I didn't step on any toes of the people who go all the time. We will do it again for sure but we need to check a few other places before we do. Also, take plenty of cash because everywhere down there charges a 20% credit card fee and we never felt like we would come up missing money the wrong way.
