From everything posted here and in many of these forums it all comes down to the Dive Operation and the Instructor. Not all are created equal, and they should be; however there are several certification agencies, all with their own standards, and within those standards, many instructors/DM's and dive operations may get complacent with the standards over the daily grind, get lazy or just don't care enough. It is unfortunate because none of us got into it with those habits, but working the same job everyday....well you get it.

it has been mentioned in many posts, if you have a bad training experience, try another dive outfit or instructor, chances are you will find a good one. You can also report such incidences to their certifying agency. They will usually get a call, in minor instance they may be required to take an update training course and in extreme cases could be suspended until they re-take their instructor training class. Please note, just because you think they may have done something wrong doesn't mean they did. As students you would not be aware of all the standards we are held to and thus could be getting upset for nothing. More times than not it comes down to communication, where as you are expecting one thing and the seasoned dive professional is just doing what he was instructed to do. Remember, even as instructors we take on some habits of our mentors, perhaps not all instructors had good instructors themselves.

I feel for those of you who have had a bad experience. Please pass on to your friends that it is worth another try. Talk to someone, get a referral, take a private lesson.

good diving to you all

Brian
