Not a fan of rental gear, in fact other than lead and tanks, I bring my own. Nothing like a suit God knows who has pissed in, or a reg that might have been serviced this decade, and puked in last dive? It's a life support system........ I travel with two wetsuits, and never hit the 45lb mark. After a few trips you learn what not to bring, and how to pack....... ;)

Darol, If I wasn't excited before, I sure am now. How can I not be when I get a chance spend time in a pissed in wetsuit and use a puked in regulator...

So kinda got me thinking, how does one decide that scuba diving is something they want to pursue without using rented gear (pissed in and puked in)? For me, we planned a trip to Australia and then thought, hey, we're in Aus, we really need to scuba dive on the GBR. So we went to our local dive shop and registered for our OW course. Completed that and a month later we were on a liveaboard out of Cairns on the GBR, where I took my AOW and Nitrox. I had a blast and loved every minute of it. My wife enjoyed it but wasn't really comfortable until our last dive which was very relaxed and slow and she was able to control her buoyancy quite a bit better.

So, is it time to go to the LDS and drop money on our own gear? I'm probably closer to that point than my wife. Problem I have now is with 14 dives, what gear? The path that I decided on is to dive Coz with rental gear, talking to other divers about their gear and things they like/dislike and get a better idea of what my diving will be in the future. This will let me make a more educated decision on what I need for equipment. If I could of thought of a way to know what equipment was best for me before I started diving and even if I would enjoy diving, then I guess I wouldn't have had to ever use all that nasty rental equipment as we've described above. On a side note, both my local dive shop and the dive op in Cairns have provided me excellent equipment as rentals.

I'll take the rest of my thoughts and questions on this to the Basic Scuba Discussions.

We're all down there swimming around in the world's largest toilet, used by all the fish and marine mammals that exist when we dive, is some pee in a wetsuit or vomit in a reg really that big of a deal? ;)

I guess it's your comfort zone. A life support system, IMHO, is a worthy investment, so a decent reg, and dive computer are a must. Service is also an issue, I like to know the last time, and by whom, my regs are worked on. I could tell a few rental gear stories, naw.............
