Pondering if we should rent a car or not for our upcoming trip. Family of 5, staying at Aldora and diving with them. We enjoy walking, and are familiar with the distance from Aldora to town. I don't recall taxi prices, though. We'd probably be doing a trip to Mega a few times and dinners each night....

We had a rental last year, but were staying another mile or so North of Aldora.

Opinions?

(I'm also assuming it's not too late to rent a car this close to our trip around new years.....)

We did. Mainly because we are staying in the back of town and saving huge $$ vs the Aldora villas. So even with adding the car rental we are still far ahead of the game. Loved the villas but not a fan of the north zone, too cut off from town imo. Not sure how parking is going to work out, that’s going to be something new. Booked with ISIS, pretty sure a GOL is a VW Golf? Was going to get a Bug but the owner of our casa said they are broken into with regularity, the cars batteries being a hot item. Who knew? Plus I forgot no AC. 5 days and counting:)

Depends. We do because we like to use it for shore diving and because we rent a house back in the city.

Taxi to town or Mega will be 112 pesos each way for 5, 75 for 1-4.
A car is nice to have, but it's not essential at the Villa, since taxis are pretty easy, there are bikes, and it's a beautiful walk. And good shore diving is right out front.

We hired a taxi driver to take us to Punta Sur (plus a trip around the island) and pick us up later and I think it cost about $70 US. I've seen ads for car rentals in Mexico for only a few dollars but the insurance is where they get you. We walk all around San Miguel and if we do get tired it's usually only 30-40 pesos to get a taxi from where I was--not sure exactly where Aldora is. Generally there are several taxis waiting outside MEGA and Chedraui except for when we have a bunch of groceries.

Villa Aldora is in North Hotel Zone 1. I used copies of the fare cards the taxistas use to check the fare for 5 passengers. 112 pesos. I use the taxis from the same neighborhood to Centro, Mega, etc. quite often. 75 pesos.
Fares of 30-40 pesos are for city zones.

112 pesos seems like a strange amount for a taxi; in the past usually it's been some multiple of 5. Lots of 1 peso coins are going to change hands and it seems to me that the "I don't have change" game may become more prevalent.

Taxi rates

112 Pesos for 5 unless they charge you an extra 8 Pesos for supermarket as indicated on page 1.

The Villa Aldora will take you to the Mega when you arrive for free. There us a small supermarket a short walk from the Villa that can handle the rest.
