In the past when I had to cut them off I didn't bother - I found a SP dealer and bought new hardware for a few bucks (literally - its was something like $5 for the whole set)

You found a SP dealer that carried the "U" and pin? Does SP make a similar spring heel product, or were these adapted from something else?

By the way, if the "U" get ruined while removing the pin I may be screwed because I don't see a ready method of removing it from the delrin coupling piece without seriously damaging it.

The "U",flat piece and pin are the original strap mechanism!

All the spring-strap installer did was turn the pin around - its usually on the other end. No big deal.

The original strap hardware can be ordered, and its cheap. IDI just took a dirt-nap (although I hear they may be resurrected), so you might have to get the SP parts, but they should be interchangeable.

Once you have the pin out of the "U" the entire thing should come apart, with the "U" coming out of the Delrin block (some versions of this have two screws through it to keep it in place - no torque on them, just like "keepers" - looks like either you have screws or roll pins - if roll pins they can be easily driven out) - then the spring backs out of the block along with the "U" through it and the caveline that prevents overextension.

No big deal taking it apart once you get the pin out.

I see! I have only used one of the old SP/IDI straps once before and I didn't recall exactly how they worked. Turning the "U" around and having the pin hold the strap on makes sense...

Now I don't foresee any difficulty obtaining new parts as needed.

Thanks for the info...
