Why do it the hard way, as everybody else is advising?
Just take the 2nd stage off the hose and toss it in the dishwasher. 1 cycle later it doesn't smell of smoke or anything else and works fine.

I have successfully removed the smoke smell using a baking soda solution soak for a couple of days.
Thanks. I like the BS soak idea as well. I have 2 weeks before the trip so I'm going to try:
  • distilled water soak, if still stinky then
  • distilled water with a little dish soap, if still stinky then
  • distilled water with baking soda
After that I may drive out to Palo Verde Nuclear Plant and throw it in the reactor vessel.

you need to strip it down replace the diaphragm and the mushroom valve then use the simple green 50/50 then soak overnight in clean fresh water I have'"got the smell out "of a dozen regs like that
