Quick question. I'm shopping for my first regulator and I need to know what the basic considerations should be. Can someone give me a short list of MUST HAVE technology is for a good regulator?

I was thinking more like "balanced", "piston", "diaphram", manufactures that are good, bad whatever. Kind of a feature check list.

Thanks.

balanced is nice, but then you can get a nice Scuba Pro Mk2 with a R190 for about $250. it is not balanced but its a bullet proof reg. People have their preferences between piston and diaphragm, its like Ford vs Chevy. They both have advantages/drawbacks. If you stick with Scuba Pro, Atomic, Apeks, and a few others, you cant get a bad reg. Having said all that I would look for a second stage that is adjustable, if it is not adjustable, the cracking pressure is hardly ever set real smooth and you will have more work of breathing. Then again, find a good tech and he can adjust it for ya...

Ease of service might be a consideration.
Sealed if cold water.

I dive a Zeagle Envoy Deluxe.
