Ironically this argues in favor of a computer. A reg you can always rent, a computer maybe or maybe not.

Adam

Most rental regs aren't exactly top of the line. They'd deliver air but not necessarily in the manners that you would prefer.

I'd buy a good set of regs first and worry about computer later.

Buy a regulator... Dont trust rentals especially on third world countries. I was able to rent a reg one time which the 2nd stage didnt breath right and leaked. I had to use the octopus the whole time. Scary experience.

Regs! buy your own! a dive computer is a good bit of kit to have no doubt about it, but as long as u have a depth gauge, air gauge a under water timer and RPD your set. i know a comp can recalculate you NDL on the fly, but why push the boat out? if u want to do multilevel use the wheel or the ERDP, 'cos as we all know, just when u need it oh ho battery's gone! i have a suunto vyper but i only use it for time and my ascent rate, i know its 18 mtres/60 ft per min, but my comp says 10 and thats what i follow 'cos i'm paranoid!

another good reason to buy your own is this. in 2002 when i was doing my O/W abroad, they didnt teach us buddy checks, or to check everything properly. result was the girl i was buddyed with had a split mouth piece, when we got to about 18 mtres the water came in thru the split, she switched to her octo, which didnt work! Dm rescued her and, thankfully apart from trying to drink the Med she was ok, but spent the rest of the day on the boat looking very ill bless her. needless to say, i did my O/W when i got home, UK.

If I was only going to carry one bit of kit on me to a dive destination it would be a computer. So that would inform my answer as to which bit of kit I would purchase.

Same here!
