I'm going to Cozumel in Jan 4-21.
I have a regulator but hasn't been used in about a year. I'm a better off getting it serviced? Can I get it serviced when I'm down there?

Thanks

Cozumel Scuba Repair -- cozumelscubarepair.com -- on 1st betwen 85 and 90, can handle the servicing, but you will almost certainly pay more for parts in Cozumel. I don't know what kind of regulator you have, but when I get my Oceanic Delta serviced, there is a standard "kit" of replacement parts that gets used. Also, if you have an off brand, he might not have the parts on hand. If you've got a month before you leave, I think you're safer getting the servicing done at your local dive shop.

+1, and why would anyone want to screw around with getting gear serviced while they're on vacation?

Concur. Find a dive shop at home that can do it and turn it in this week.

have a local shop bench test it and physically inspect the easily visible parts.

I'm away from home (where my regulator is) so I might not have time to get it serviced here so I was trying to figure out a backup plan.

I will look into the bench test as lionfish recommended.

Thanks everyone

reread what awap said .. unless you believe that there is something wrong (ie you put it away broken) then i wouldn't service a reg just before going on vacation .. maybe a bench test but that's it

I agree with awap's moto of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' and believe that yearly overhaul of a reg is not only an overkill but detrimental for a lightly used recreational rig. If you are putting hundreds of dives per year on one it might be warranted but each time it is taken apart and reassemble, the risk of induced damage is introduced.
If you want to bench check it on the island take it up to Javier at CSR Welcome to Cozumel Scuba Repair - fixing your underwater expirience since 1990! . Normally he can perform a bench check and adjustments while you wait and his bench is right there so you can observe and learn, which is interesting. If he needs to keep it overnight for an overhaul, he has loaner rigs. I trust Javier and have found his quality of work and pricing to be very good.

Your backup plan for any dive trip should be to have access to another set of regs. I always bring my own but most dive ops will have one on the boat. You also have the option of renting regs if needed.

There is a thread on inspecting regs in the regulator forum. If you must take them to a shop, you might be better off asking for an inspection rather than a bench test. And it should be a shop that you trust not to take advantage of you. Really better to spend the $$ on an IP gauge so you can do the inspection yourself.
