I just don't log dives
When diving doubles or side mounts, is there any reason to have the same first stages? Other than parts/service redundancy.

I have a DS4 right now and will be getting deeper into tech. I am thinking I might get a HOG D2 because the price is too good to pass up especially since Apeks is so expensive here in the US. Seems they are about the same size, both will be DIN...

Should I maybe consider a HOG D3 or D1?

Any thoughts would be helpful...

I don’t think using different regulator is issue. But do keep in mind, the grand scheme of doing tech diving is expansive. I am not so sure saving a bit of money in a regulator makes an impact at all. You will need quite a few reg very soon.

1st stage torrent makes hose routing a little easier.

I do not plan on diving (pardon the pun) into tech too quickly. I have been diving a while, seen enough and am a little too wise for that. Right now I need another reg set because most of my diving is going to be in NJ and all of the boats require a complete second air source. I simply want one I can grow with and will get me back in the water ASAP.

I have 4 hog D1 regulators which I use for Sidemount and tech and love them, also I read that Deep 6 makes a nice reg. also

Use whatever equipment you have

A lot of people here recommend Atomic and there seem to be a lot up for sale various places. You’d have to check to see which ones are preferred.

Make that Scubapro too!

Any consensus on whether having two different first stages (assuming both are DIN or Yoke) poses an issue in terms of safety or training?

You can have 2 diff first stages if you like. The reason why many divers have the same 1st stage for both tanks is that they buy the high end 1st stage either at first when they were single tank diving and then moved to doubles (and then they buy the same as they are happy) OR when they want to buy for doubles they will buy the same (regulator). Hope this makes sense.

honestly, it is about simplicity of maintenance. With two, three, four etc. stages, you only need a single kit if something goes sideways....

My right post is a Scubapro, my left post is an Atomic. It's just what I ended up with. As long as you get two solid regulators, it doesn't matter if they match.
