Regulator/Octo Tests

Howdy Everybody -

Over the past few years I have been slowly adding to my scuba equipment and have finally purchased a regulator and octo to go along with my dive computer and bcd. Once I have everything hooked up (reg, octo, gauges, bcd hose) what are the best ways to test the gear before getting in the water? I know there are a few things that can be done at the dive shops, but I'm not sure what they are.

Hook up a tank, turn it on, and place it in a pool or bathtub to check for leaks. Alternatively, you can splash soapy water all over and watch for bubbles. Make sure the inflator hose works and the gauge reads the right pressure. Give the reg a few breath tests to make sure you can breathe off it. Do a shallow pool/quarry dive to check it all out before hitting the cave/ocean/lake.

We don't get fancy about it. We follow the manufacturers recomendations for checking interstage pres and adjusting second stage cracking pres. Check for leaks and your done. Usually interstage presure is fine (but should be chacked). almost all second stages can use some tweaking as they come out of the box.
