b. It was purchased second hand
That is a joke, and one that means I won't be taking anything to them for servicing or tank inspection again. OK the price for my reg (also purchased second hand, but they have no problem with an old Conshelf) and tanks is minimal...but it's also easy money, they just lost! I'll support my LDS when they support me!

Are your regulators a brand that your LDS carries? If not, they may not be able to get part easily but they should have a repor with other shops that can service it/them and should volunteer to do that for you. It may cost a little more for shipping though.

Oh yes. They sell Aqualung gear. The only problem we have is needing to get the octo detuned slightly as it has a habit of freeflowing. Last I heard, that didn't require any parts, just someone willing to crack it open and tweak it. I suspect they are just pissed we have never bought any of our stuff from them, but we always gave them the chance.

The adjustment is very easy to make and takes about 5 minutes to adjust and test, but You will want to have the intermediate pressure checked first.

Would you be willing to (in private if you prefer) to let me into the secret of opening up the octo? I've not managed to get inside it yet (whici is a pain as it is a ***** to clean in sandy conditions). I've worked a lot with gas lines and the like, so I am sure I can do the tweak myself.

I bought my regs from Larry, and although my LDS would have serviced them for me, their base cost was more than I paid ScubaToys INCLUDING shipping!! :11ztongue

Amazing that another LDS didn't care about the providence of my wife's reg. Took it in and had it looked at. It is just annoying that although I have only bought oddments from the first shop, we did spend along the lines of 1000 on classes with them, as well as referring people to them. That have just lost out on my good will period. Such a shame.

PM me your email and I'll send you some info. I have not worked on AquaLung equipment but I have most of their manuals. I'll need to know the model of the octo and approximate age.

Airplane parts *are* controlled. Critical parts usually have a paper trail that can be followed back all the way back to the compenent manufacturer.

It's an interesting point but still no different from cars, guns and airplanes, all industries of which sell parts to the general public. Nobody has ever explained what the difference is supposed to be.

Are you saying that stalling is the only or even probable result of a failure? Pretty weak analogy.
 
There are any number of car failures that can kill a large number of innocent people.. but it's very unlikely that a regulator failure will kill anyone at all, much less an innocent bystander.
