I would have to see you do this to be sure, but it sounds like you might be confused about how you are exhaling. I have seen many students who cannot really tell whether they are exhaling through their nose or mouth. This is most common with people who exhale forcefully through their regulator (mouth) when they are trying to clear their mask, but you might be doing the opposite; tht is, you may be exhaling forcefully through your nose when you are trying to clear your regulator.

I gather this from the problems you are having with your mask while you do this--it sounds like you are breaking your seal with a nose exhalation.

DeputyDan:
When you learn to spit your chew underwater then you will be an expert at reg removal.
I've done that. I learned it's best to do so before you breathe some of it in. :silly:

And remember in any body of water things(fish, people, animals, birds, etc) do things in that water. :D :06: ;) . This should also help you to find incentive to spit it out thru your reg.:D

Oh Oh, I didn't know you were not supposed to get a mouth full of water when you open it to insert reg. I always clear my reg by blowing out the water, not purge valve. (all those years of snorkeling I guess, just a reflex now). The water in my mouth just gets spit out like all the other stuff your not supposed to swallow.

Keep at it and you'll get it

Yeah, water gets in, and yeah - blowing it out like you do a snorkel is fine. Snorkeling is great prelude to reg breathing, but many don't have the experiences you did.

Purging, with your tongue protecting your throat from having water forced down it, is easier. ;)

First of all, DON'T be embarrased about anything that doesn't go perfectly at first. Just remember that we all had to start somewhere! If the instructor is good, they will see you need a little personal attention with this skill. Don't be afraid to ask for help!! Good Luck

Don't worry about getting water in the mouth, just spit it out after the reg is in place. Try it in the pool next time. You take the reg out, smile, talk, open mouth, do crazy faces to your budy, watch him get a flooded mask because of the laugh and then put it back in and spit. You have plenty of time. Have fun.

Also, if you have no air left, put reg back in mouth (all full of water now) lean forward and instead of spitting, purge slowly the reg, all the water should get out. Now is time to test it, you try to inhale (very small breath) to see if air or water is coming in. If it is air, you are all set. If not, restart the process until it works.

Worst situation is that you will breath some water and choke. Again, no problem since there are plenty of air left in the tank to choke until all water is out. At this point, your only worries are the crap you ingested in the process ;)
