Aside from the obvious mask, fins, boots, the first purchase I made once certified was a custom wetsuit. I couldn't find rentals that fit well, and since most of my diving is Southern California, comfort/warmth is a priority. I tried about a half-dozen regs and BCs of various types thanks to friends and rentals before deciding on what I wanted to invest my money in. I decided early on that I wanted my own gear -- I wanted everything to fit and work well, become comfortable with the operation, and focus on the diving. I saved up during this trial phase and then pulled the trigger on a regulator set and BP/W simultaneously. I am extremely happy with my decision and every dive since has lacked any equipment issues.
