I know, probably a newbie question. I did open the "2008 Dive Reports" thread and obviously that's all post-dive info. Where and/or how would one assess the potential dive conditions for a given area? For example, if I wanted to dive Shaw's Cove this weekend, how/where would I get info? I know I can find surf conditions but is that and weather all I need? Is there a formula to relate those stats to conditions underwater, surge, currents, etc? Thanks for bearing with what might seem a naive question.

Hey Matt,
For Shaw's, Laguna Sea Sports has a # you can call. 1-949-494-6965. It's a recording, and semi accurate. But as previously stated ... You never really know 'till ...

Hello,
lagunaseasports.com has conditions info on their website, but I don't know how reliable it is.

For diving in Malibu, the lifeguard hotline (310-457-9701) is pretty accurate, but it seems to be out of order. Sometimes I'll call Malibu Divers and see if they have info, because they probably will have asked the customers that day if they dove and how it was.

Pacific Waverider shows swell, wind and surge reports, and I've found this to be useful.

WetSand.com > Surf Reports > Southern California

But my favorite is http://www.surfline.com/reports/report.cfm?id=4209 because it shows the webcams for a bunch of sites and some info at each place. You can watch the streaming video and see how it looks.

LA County is going to be putting on their Rips, Rocks & Reefs program again this year. It is the best program for learning how to assess potential conditions and sites I've ever seen. And, it gives a lot of good basic info on many of the favorite local sites.

Hey Bruce,
Thanks for that info. I heard about that class last year and wanted to do it. I checked out their website and tried to register but their email bounces back. Do you happen to have any contact info for them?
