A while back I read here that there was a company with a website who offers reg service courses and I tried the link but the site was down and then I just forgot about it until now but I cant for the life of me remember that link. I googled a few things and came up with only 1 good hit but thats in asia. There must be a place in the states that teaches a course on reg service to people who dont work in a dive shop. I am also looking for classes on O2 cleaning, gas blending, valve repair, and VIP's. I know PSAI teaches the tanks stuff but and many tech shops do the blender classes but ther reg stuff is hard to come by and really if possible I would like to find 1 shop to stick with for my classes just to make life easier. Thanks

thanks for the tip but that isn't the place I saw previously. Anybody else know of any. Thanks

Are you possibly thinking of the class on Promate regs that East Coast Diver Supply had a while back.

The problem with generic classes is they do not "authorize" you to work on and specific brand. If you get a class for brand X, brand Y will still not sell you parts. Many manuf will not let you in a class unless you are sponcered by a shop and some will not let you in unless your sponcered by a shop that sells that brand. All in all a real pain. I took a really good generic course with a LDS that was plenty of information to do most work I need to do but parts are still an issue. For parts your best bet is to get real friendly with your local tech (beer helps). My next reg pruchase may well be decided by the parts policy of the manuf.

My closest LDS is the only real close scubapro dealer and tech but he does everything strictly by the books and will not sell me parts, tools, or even let me look at any manuals. All I want to really learn to service is SP regs but after whatever class I take I need to be able to get parts. I own 14 stages and intend to own many more because of how I configure gear I prefer to have all my regs designated to specific uses (IE, deco gas, 100% O2, stage bottles, doubles diving, sidemount diving, singles diving, bailout bottles) essentially seperate regs for every diving need. It cost me over $400 to get my stuff serviced last and many of those were covered under the free parts for life plan.

The most intensive course I know of is Halls Diving School. I think this is the link.....

As to parts, there is a pretty intense effort by the factories to restrict the retail sales of parts and repair kits. In addition, many dive stores consider the sale of kits to be against their best interests. That being said, you can search and find repair parts from various places.

You might also consider finding a repair technician who does sufficient volume to allow you to apprentice to learn repairs. The "brand specific" factory certification classes are a legal issue only, not very good for taking a lay person and turning them into a regulator repair technician.
