If you are thinking of going technical some instructors require regulators that meet U.S. Navy Class A requirements.

You might want to get something that is compatable later on with high percentages of oxygen like the Poseidon Xstream Duration. Most regulators that are being marketed as "Nitrox" ready are only really good for up to 40% oxygen mixes.

Ask your instructor for recommendations - not necessarily brands, but what features are required. Some agencies or instructors are particular on the types regulators you use.

Here's a page on regulators for technical diving.

I want to buy a reg that I can use for some entry level tech classes next year. What should I be looking for in a reg?

A first stage and a second stage. :D

With a hose connecting the two :D

More seriously, what are your current regs? They may be just fine for starting down the long and expensive tech road.

The best resource is the instructor you will have. However, this can also be a good resource: Equipment Configuration | Global Underwater Explorers, but be aware GUE is very specific about required gear and not everyone agrees with everything said there.

Take you classes then buy a reg based on what you used, what you presently have and how it will need to be rigged, I use Zeagle flatheads. Stick with one brand and one 1st stage, it make it easier to service and switch up parts.
