No doubt about that, and yes, that is not a pleasant thought and I hope it never happens. :icon10:

Not trying to be too gross here, but if you ever get sick underwater and throw up into your reg, you'll learn to loooove that purge button...LOL

Quarrior:
Yes you are correct if you block the opening with your tongue, but, I was also taught to never push the purge with the reg in your mouth, ...

What was the reasoning?

You probably got the reg upside down. This happened to me on my first checkout dive. My wife gave me the reg upside down and I made a newbie mistake by not paying attention. I sucked in a lungful of water and had to pop to the surface to hack it out. At any rate you managed the second time around so I would not be too worried about it.

In my OW class we were taught to switch regs then blow out if you have enough air. And on your next/first breath in curl your tounge infront of the mouth peice to keep the Reg from shooting water down your throat. If you don't have enough air in your lungs to purge the reg then use the button after covering the mouth peice with your tounge. Just remember when switching regulators under water blow a tiny stream of bubbles while switching to keep your airway open.

Huh? I was taught that one of the ways to clear a second stage is to purge it while it's in the mouth, tongue preventing this from pushing water down your throat.

I do this on almost every dive now - deploying and checking my pony reg or alternate second stage, then back to my primary second state.

Do I just need a few dives in warm water to increase my confidence?
Always a good idea! ;)

I was helping out with a refresher course guy and I was his DB. I ALMOST did the same upside down reg trick. Luckily I caught it and turned it right side.

I still don't understand the reg not in your mouth idea.

Not my words, "you can overexpand your lungs".

You're correct on both points, the in mouth purge is "one" of the ways, another which I use is to blow out. I also always do a reg switch on every dive to check my reg and practice the skill too.

All I was doing was offering up something that works and is safe.

Quarrior, are you worried about getting lung overexpansion? The reg must be in ur mouth before u purge as otherwise water will enter through the mouthpeice when u stop purging and u are back to square one with a flooded reg. I havn't heard of ppl getting a lung overexpansion from pushing the purge button with the reg in their mouth.

cmcarver was spot on with his desciption:

I have used both methods numerous times, as Im sure 99.9% of the rest of the board has and had no problems.
