Using knots on a line for calculating stop depths doesn't work great when you have a current at different depths and your DSMB is being pulled at an angle.

I dont knot any line anymore. Not spools and not exploration line, as we do survey with the mnemo. Knots just introduce inaccuracies, and is useless use of time to knot the line when we don't use them. For manual survey we can "walk the line" with a meter long line. Its about as fast as counting knots, but you do need 2 hands for it. I don't think there is any need for knotted lines anymore.

If your bottom-timer fails you can follow your team, pretty unlikely with all depth gauges being out of order on dive. But if you intend to us it as a depth measuring device i would recommend to not just knot the line but also put rings on the line with a permanent marker next to the knot so you can see if your 3 or 7 knots deep. (its not really useful, but if you plan to use it like this its marginally more useful for places with no current)
