I go along with Diverbuoy. Brain first - computer set on depth and timer function second. I leave a b/u computer in my save a dive kit just in case, but it would be used in the same manner.

I always dive with 2 computers, OW reef diving that is, there's no way I'm getting anywhere near the same bottom time with tables. I'm off the tables at the end of my first dive. I also don't dive with the same computers or algs. I just make sure both are "happy" before I surface. On extended trips or two week livaboards I usually take 4 or 5 computers just for the heck of it. I end up handing one or two out to someone just about every trip

Learn to dive without tables or computers using only your brain ... it's not difficult at all .. just simple math. Find out how - take a DIR Fundies class today! (Hrmph that sounded a little like an ad).

ie. when spending an week at a remote dive resort.

I have a computer and a seperate timer/depth gauge, and a spare analog SPG. I voted no, because only one is a computer . . .

We just need Uncle Pug to mention that computers rot your brain. :D:D:D

I prefer analog backups to my computer. Never have to worry about batteries for those, and tend to be more robust than electronics. Plus I write down my dives at the end of each day, so I dont have to worry about losing too much info if my computer goes down.

I'm trying very hard to get to the point where I feel comfortable diving with just a depth gauge and bottom timer. In the meantime, because I'm human and sometimes don't have the bandwidth I wish I had, I use a Suunto Mosquito. As it happens, I have a Cobra that I no longer use, because I prefer the wrist location . . . but when we go to the BVI in April, I will take the Cobra and its hose with me in case there is a malfunction in the Mosquito. The biggest reason for doing so is that I do not own another instrument with the ability to measure depth. I have a watch that will give me dive time, but until or unless I buy something new, I need the computers as depth gauages.
