Just got back from a sunny Vesak Day weekend in Redang in Malaysia. Had a FANTASTIC time!! :D

Redang is one of the offshore islands off the north coast of West Malaysia which is renowned for its underwater beauty. The sites were quite good with a huge variety of lovely gorgonian, sea fans, whips and other soft corals. The fauna are bountiful. Saw skate and spotted rays in Mak Cantek, blacktipped reef sharks, hawksbills at Cik Isa, fimbrated and giant eels, juvenile barracudas at Terembu Kili. Macros are good too with decorated crabs, hermits, dragon nudibranches. Tons of terrifying triggers which seem to be in season right now. Vis was average ~10 m. Some currents with the morning tide and the full moon.

AB and Sharon run a top notch dive op at Diver's Den. The dives were well organised, starts punctually. Was a little concerned about 2 DMS to a group of 14, but they were good to keep us in and out of the sites safely. Sharon has a stunning memory for the local dive sites and seems to even know the baramundi cods in Terembu Kili by name!

The accomodations at the Redang Kalong resort is quite basic with its own idyllic beach. The snorkelling on the house reef is great, saw some baby turtles but swam away when this uncomfortably fat whitetip reef shark got too friendly with me! There isn't much of a nightlife around this report but Kalong is a short walk to the busier Long Beach with its holiday hordes.

There is some concern with the huge crowds of snorkelers but Sharon was good to avoid the busy sites. At the 6 dive sites we visited, there were no other boats to share the sites with us.

Redang may not be as assessible to visitors outside Asia but remains a great destination for a lot of us in Singapore and Malaysia. Will try to post some pics later.. :D

Good to hear you had such a good time. If you have a chance next time visit Pulau Tenggol. Tenggol has some VERY nice diving as well and is a beautiful quiet group of islands with healthy reefs and lots of critters.

Nice report. Bummer about the poor viz though. I hope later in June/July during my planned Redang dive, I could get at least 20m, hopefully.

Anyway Traminer, what time does the morning dive start and end? I'm thinking of doing 2d/1n resort stay. The returning boat to Merang would be about 2pm, so I'm wondering I could dive in the morning and be back in time to depart for mainland? Please let me know.

Nice report .....thanks for sharing

My first post to Scubaboard!

Was in Redang a couple of weeks ago. It rained every evening, so the visibility was quite bad. Despite that, I thought the dives were excellent.

I took the luxury package - flew Berjaya Air direct to Redang, and stayed in Berjaya Redang. Because there were no cheap rooms left, I took a room in the new wing, high up on the hill. It turned out to be a great decision, because the rooms were very nice. Bright clean luxurious bathroom with shower area and a bathtub that is separated from the main room by a blind. The room had a very comfortable king-sized bed, and a small balcony.

Food is expensive in Berjaya (by Malaysian standards anyway - US$15 for the buffet dinner) but there is a restaurant outside the main entrance where you can get prata, ice-kacang, satay, Ramly burgers, and seafood, all at a fraction of the cost. No alcohol though, so expect to pay Singapore prices for beer at Berjaya.

Diving is at the 5-star PADI centre within Berjaya. Pretty good service. Best dive was at Terembu Kili, a good 25 min boat ride away. Could see sharks, turtles, barracudas, although vis was pretty bad, maybe 10 m. We did our night dive at a submerged reef called Batu Che Esa, which was interesting, lots of makro.

Downside about Berjaya is that it is otherwise pretty boring, being away from the main beach at Pasir Panjang. In reality, Berjaya is a beach resort with lots and lots of kids (I went during Singapore school hols), so if that is not your cup of tea, choose a real dive resort.

Thanks for that, Tilk... the travel to and fro the dive sites must be longer from berjaya since its located on the other side of the island. I liked Che Esa too! It was real close to Redang Kalong so we only took 10 min on speedboat.. :)

Looks like you have to hike to Pasir Panjang for better food... and I think its a good tip to BYO alcohol.. :)

malaysia-islands,
i am prety sure you can fit in a moring dive before you leve at 2. I did. It was a bit of a rush however, and be prepared to leave immediately after the dive - like back on shore, wash up and go.

kimmy, if I'm arriving Redang at 11am, will there be any boat dives departing, say, 1130am or 12pm?

I think diving the next day will be out of question because I need to leave early morning to catch another boat to Gem Island.

Malaysia-islands
If I am not wrong, there is only one boat leaving, which was the reason why I had to rush. If I miss that boat, then I can only leave the next day or charter a boat on my own which would be really costly.
I know I spent a whole day walking the town to wait for the night bus back to Singapore, so yeah, it would have to be the only boat to catch.
However, the boat doesn't always arrive on time. Sometimes with the uploading of foodstuff and unloading, it can take a while. I knew the boat didnt leave promptly at 11. If my memory serves me right, the boat left sometime about 12
Cheers
