My husband and I just finished our NAUI course and will be going to Maui over spring break. We plan to do our open water certification there. There are so many dive companies to choose from - does anyone have a recommendation? How much should we expect to pay for the 4 dives required? We are staying in the Wailea area.
Avoid Scuba Shack, shady operation and not diver friendly, mostly snorklers

I remember when scuba shack was highly thought of.

It's been awhile.

I dove with Lahaina Divers several times, but would prefer not to given the choice. Big boats, lots of divers, gets a little unorganized sometimes.

They are one of the only ops that leaves out of Lahaina though, most leave out of Kihei.

That was before another "Charlie" bought the place and besmirched our good name :)

It's not unsafe, but between the owner's personality and DM's that manhandle marine life, they are well down on my list.

OTOH, B&B is a good, reliable, consistent operation. It does tend to have a lot of new divers and I recommend experienced divers go elsewhere, though. I went out on B&B last sunday along with a neighbor that has less than 10 dives and hadn't dove in 5 years, and his daughter that hadn't dove since her cert a year ago. B&B worked with them to ease the back into diving and they had a blast. But we dove as a group of 13!! 10 customers, 3 DMs. Short dive, even though it was just me and one DM for the last 10 or 15 minutes.

When I called around last night ProDiver Maui and Mike Severns were both booked, so I ended up on Ed Robinson's 3 tank dive today. A delightful day, as usual. It's nice to have lots of good choices. :)

Oh, the best cinammon rolls in Maui are at Cinammon Roll Faire, beneath Denny's and next to Maui Dive shop in Kamalole shopping center. Mike Severns picks up an order of them each morning for onboard snacks. Just a small part of why that group of fish nerds is my favorite dive op.

Extended Horizons is a class act that departs from Mala ramp, near the Cannery Mall in Lahaina. Highly recommended 12 passenger boat.

We have 2 3-tank Adventure dives booked with Ed Robinsons when we're there in a month...since it's during spring break time, I reserved very early to make sure we got our spots. If anyone wants to join us, we're booked on April 2 and 4. :D

We'll definitely have to check out the cinammon rolls now that we know where to find them. Might have to book with Mike Severns one of these days just to get free ones. eyebrow

Yes, Extended Horizon's does Cathedrals. We went with them back in late Jan. Very good op. Warren is the reason I am diving. He was vary patient with me during my very anxious intro to scuba back in 2003. Victoria and Marin are also excellent DM's. Both have slates and will write out what they see.

The Kamalole shopping center is in Lahaina or Keihi?

Al Mialkovsky:
Charlie Extended Horizans, does it do Cathedrals?
On most trips they will do either Cathedrals I or Cathedrals II. The main exception is when there is a large swell. Then you are going to do Shark Fin and then move 200 yards to do Lighthouse. Cathedrals is the "signature" dive for Lanai, just as Molokini is the signature dive for the guys out of Kihei.

South end of Kihei. Maybe 3/4 mile north of the boat ramp. On S. Kihei road, like just about everything else in Kihei.
