Hi all- sorry to change topic slightly, but does anyone have experience using rechargeable batteries in the shearwater perdix? If so, what rechargeable would you recommend?

I've seen the FAQ on Shearwater's website but they don't mention any particular brands there.

Have the Perdix AI on order, and intend to use eneloop AA. I foresee no issues.

I've used Eneloops in my Petrel when I could not get an alkaline immediately. It works, but doesn't last that long cmpared to the alkaline.

My Petrel 2 would last so long on a battery that I went ahead and started anteing up for a SAFT battery for it. I order one every now and then along with whatever latest doodads I'm ordering from DGX, so I always have a spare on hand. Maybe not the cheapest, but still not expensive. And I only have to change the battery maybe twice a year.

@Charles2 thank you for fixing that

@flymolo I use eneloops, but have also had success with energizers. If purchasing new, I would only buy eneloops. You can also use rechargeable 14500's if you want to go lithium but those tend to be a touch harder to find

Thanks Tbone. I'll try them. Have you used them in cold water?

This past weekend I learned my lesson on using a rechargeable battery in my Petrel 2. I was using the Energizer rechargeable that I mentioned earlier and at the start of dive two of my Intro class I had a full battery icon on the surface and did approx a 45min dive and when I was looking over my dive info on my post dive brief, I noticed my battery had dropped from full to about a 1/4th of a charge and had gone orange. It is back to regular ole alkaline batteries for my computer. Buy a four pack of good batteries and put the unused ones in your dive bag.

Yeah, in the end, I think rechargeables in any device where you expect to put the battery in and leave it for weeks or more is not the best idea and doesn't really save you very much money at all, either. If you expect to take them out to recharge every day or two, then yeah.

I use rechargeables in my dive lights and strobes, but not my Perdix. For dive lights and strobes, I take the batteries out at the end of each day and then I charge them the night before I plan to use them again.

@Doby45 did you make sure to tell the petrel what kind of battery was in it so the battery gauge functioned properly? question specifically because energizer doesn't make a lithium rechargeable AA, so if you didn't tell it that it was a nimh battery, the gauge doesn't work properly. I use eneloops in my Petrel and just put a new battery in before the first dive and it will usually last about a week of pretty heavy diving
