That is a great response but I have one question, are you saying that some people in this class are going to go cave diving or penetrate a wreck? Because if you are going inside a wreck or cave you need deco training (as well as other training) even if you don't plan on doing deco.

I think this is an incorrect assumption. There are many cave divers and folks doing wreck penetration that have no desire or need to do deco diving.

So you are saying it is ok to be four levels in a wreck at 120' and not know anything about deco? Ok lets look at it 2 min to get to the wreck that leaves you 4 min to get in and out and two back to the line. Hmmm lets say you get hung up on something opps I am in deco what do I do now? Looks like a good plan and the person I quoted did say four decks in.

Why do you need deco training to do shallow caves or wrecks? I've done a wreck penetration workshop (although I haven't practiced enough to feel competent to do wreck penetration yet), and I intend to do Cave 1 next spring, and I will not have done any deco training before then, and nobody has said I need to.

We are not talking shallow are we? I thought this was 100+ we where talking not a 30' to 80' cave or wreck.

I think you just made my point for me about the true reason for the class, and the all too often misidentification of the true risk(s) of a dive. I doubt any sane person would do a dive that provided for 4 minutes of actual exploration time when juxtaposed against the multiplicity of issues associated with a dive that we are talking about, helium notwithstanding. The idea is to evaluate a dive plan, and in the instant case, the proposed dive plan makes no sense so why do it in the first place?

The class is all about weighing NDL time -v- reward, it's about weighing Minimum Gas reserves against the reward, it's about picking the right plan for the dive and in the proposed scenario I wouldn't do the dive.. As I noted, helium is but a small part of the class..

Don't put words in my mouth. I would never advocate such a plan, nor do I hope you would either.

I agree with you (MHK) I think, my point was that below 100 the main reason to use trimix is for those more difficult dives that you really need to be clear headed. Although why do these dives to stay for 5 or 10 minutes if you are spending the time and money why not learn the deco so you can enjoy the dive.

It depends on the person, the day, the conditions, the depth, the task, etc. I think it nuts to dive mix to 120 with eighty degree plus water, two hundred foot of visibility and a look/see dive plan. But move that dive to 40 degree water, ten foot of visibility and a very complex dive that requires clear thinking and team work to accomplish … well, then I take the best mix I can get. Where’s the line in between? I don’t really know, that’s a judgment call. I don’t get very narked, I usually dive NITROX on air tables for a little extra margin (at least down to 130).
