I JUST finished reading JJ's book and was just looking for somewhere to post. This is EXACTLY what I was thinking! Book was well written, NOT imflamatory. Very good, sound points brought out in it!

The word you're looking for is Robust.

The book is robust.

To Andy's point - the quickest way to get turned off by DIR is to read about it on the internet... Especially from the Florida WKRP leadership braintrust. Pluh-leese. If you are looking to a central, fearless leader behind the curtain you will be sorely dissapointed.

To Cath's point - the quickest way to get fired up about DIR is to actually meet and dive with some of us. Any non-speedo wearing DIR type would suffice.

Its about the divers. Its about the training. Its not a cult of personality. You're killing me with this stuff. Its just laughable.

although JJ said last year that he was looking for another word... he
was tired of getting ribbed about "robust"

the robust book, does it come with a backup CD in case the paper version fails?

no, because the book has no failure points, and the CD is unecessary

Uncle Pug's comes with rusted staples and no pictures.

Does that count??

2. The choice of the DIR name can be construed to imply that other approaches are 'wrong'
Just got done reading a good deal of the posts... caustic is definitely the word I would use.

hey, if you know you're doing it right, why get so threatened over a name?

No one is really threatened by "DIR" by itself, but, many of the people that promote DIR tend to lie, obfuscate, malign, libel, and slander others (especially the great divers that paved the way).

That gets divers who have done it themselves really upset.

well... all over this Board there have been complaints that "DIR" as a name
is poorly chosen, derogative, etc. it just got called "caustic" (abrasive).

so? that has nothing to do with DIR as a system.

for example, General Patton was a petty, vain, abusive, self-righteous, and
insulting man.

yet, his battles are still studied at West Point as models of tank-infantry assault,
and he was the only Allied general the Germans truly feared.

in other words, don't confuse the messanger with the message
